imo the Iroquois are severely underrated. The Longhouse flat +1 hammer/forest can easily exceed the 10% gain you're missing early on. Sure, you miss out on chopping, but that's not really the end of the world. It also doesn't have to be a lumber mill in the tile, you do get the extra hammer even if it's a trading post or a fort.

I've heard for years, even recently, that the Iroquois are a garbage tier civ and usually ranked worst or second worst civ in the game. I wouldn't say they're the best civ, probably not even top 10, but I'd say putting them in the bottom 5 even is pretty harsh. Their ability is the first thing people misinterpret and don't properly understand.

Early game: Expand as many cities you possibly can. 7 or 8 is great. Get luxes, religion if possible and focus on production buildings. Really, fuck growth. 15 pop cap is plenty, everything else should be 9 or 10. Get roads as minimum as possible, buy tiles or settle cities 4 tiles apart. Prioritize horses for circus.

The Iroquois are another civilization (like India) that receives a lot of hate from the Civ V gaming community due to some supposedly lackluster, highly-situational uniques. This strategy will focus on utilizing those uniques when they are beneficial, and on compensating for their downfalls and limitations.
