O'opu Facts 'O'opu were an important cultural resource to Native Hawaiians. They were used for both food and religious ceremonies (within limits of kapu). There are five different species of native 'o'opu swimming in Hawaiian streams. Four species are endemic (E), meaning they are not found elsewhere in the world.

In this lesson, students act as 'o'opu (Hawaiian gobies) at different stages of life. An obstacle course begins at the egg stage and students make their way through each step (i.e. larvae, post-larvae, juveniles, adults, etc.), from the ocean to a freshwater stream. Each stage uses a different mode of locomotion, which students enact.

The five native freshwater fish of Hawai'i are referred to as 'o'opu. Scientifically, they are actually two distinct families. The family Gobiidae (Goby - one of the largest fish families in the world) includes four species of ʻoʻopu, the nakea, naniha, nōpili and 'alamo'o. The ʻoʻopu 'akupa is in the Eleotridae family.

The Hawaiian freshwater goby, or 'O'opu (Lentipes concolor) ('o'opu 'alamo'o or 'o'opu hi'u koleis), is a species of goby endemic to Hawaii, where it occurs in mountain streams. Males of this species can reach a standard length of 7 cm (2.8 in), while females only reach 6 cm (2.4 in).
