This is the only bootleg album allowed an entry on the Metal Archives, due to its notorious historical content. The front cover is a photograph of Mayhem's vocalist, Dead (Per Yngve Ohlin), after his suicide on April 8th, 1991. The photo was taken by Euronymous. Original version on LP by Bull Metal (R.I.P.), who played in Typhon, Masacre, Neurosis, and was also the owner of Warmaster Records.

One of the strangest facts about The Dawn of the Black Hearts - except for the gruesome cover, of course - is the fact that it is not even Mayhem's official album. It is a bootleg released in 1995, thus after the death of Euronymous. The album contains songs recorded during a concert that took place on 28th February 1990 in Sarpsborg.

Euronymous was looking for something brutal he could use on the cover, and he actually joined Amnesty Norway to get access to to pictures like this. He eventually found this picture and managed to take a copy of it. The album cover on the original LP is also way more pink than intended, but Euronymous couldn't afford to do it over again.
