Today, the Foundation for Adopting Graves at the American Cemetery Margraten manages this program. With a similar intention the Foundation United Adopters American War Graves created a program known as The Faces of Margraten. This group collects photos of our fallen, and sponsors a bi-annual event at the cemetery during Dutch Memorial Day weekend.

Netherlands American Cemetery lies in the village of Margraten, 6 miles east of Maastricht. Maastricht can be reached by train from Paris (Gare du Nord) via Liège, any city in Holland, or from Germany via Aachen. A bus service runs from Maastricht railroad station. At the Netherlands American Cemetery, the Foundation for Adopting Graves at the American Cemetery Margraten and its long-standing grave adoption program received an important designation this year from the government of the Netherlands. The program is now recognized as part of the Dutch National Inventory of Immaterial Cultural Inheritance.

The cemetery was taken into use during the war based on a temporary right of use, starting from November 1944, shortly after the town of Margraten was liberated. During these first years the cemetery was used to bury the fallen of all nationalities, including German war victims.

The Foundation for Adopting Graves at the American Cemetery in Margraten offers the opportunity of adopting a grave of a fallen liberator or a name on the Walls of the Missing. The foundation also maintains the so-called Adoption Register, an extensive database with information about adopters and the graves they've adopted.
