Maurice Proctor, a member of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe, led the ground blessing ceremony for the new dining hall, Yahentamitsi, which is the first UMD building to be named for Maryland's Native American heritage. Pronounced "Yah-hen-tuh-meet-c," it means "a place to go to eat" in the Algonquian language.

By FSD Staff on Nov. 02, 2021. The University of Maryland's forthcoming dining hall will bear the name Yahentamitsi in honor of the Piscataway people, a group indigenous to the state. Yahentamitsi means "a place to go to eat" in the language once spoken by the Piscataway tribe, and it will be the first dining hall erected on the College.

One unique feature of the new dining hall is its quiet room, a room for students who are focusing on schoolwork or simply desire a quiet lunch. On the wall of the quiet room is a mural of The Three Sisters—corn, beans and squash, the three main crops of many North American indigenous tribes. The mural was constructed by a Piscataway artist.
