'Akikiki (Kauai Creeper) The 'Akikiki, or Kauai Creeper, is a small bird with a unique feeding behavior. It uses its specialized bill to pry off bark and search for insects and larvae underneath.

1. White-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon Lepturus) We never got to see these birds up-close, but they sure put on a show for us in the air! They reminded me of small dragons flying down in the canyons and gliding in front of waterfalls. These were definitely one of the most graceful birds we witnessed! Check out that long tail!

Identification: Long and slender, this Kauai bird is about 7.8 inches in length and boasts of a 10-inch wingspan. The female and male of these bird species have similar features.

Kilauea, on the island's windward shore, boasts substantial populations of seabirds, which can be viewed up close; Alaka'i is the most pristine native rain forest in the Islands and until two short decades ago its valleys still echoed with the songs of every native bird historically known to reside there.

Introduction. Kauai stands out as one of the best islands for birding in Hawaii. Its diversity of habitats, from wet forests to sandy beaches, attracts over 90 species of birds. Over 30 of these are native Hawaiian species, and nearly 20 are found only on Kauai. The island's isolation allowed unique birds like Hawaiian honeycreepers and nene.
