With an area of 25.07 km² and a population of around 2000 inhabitants, Curral das Freiras is the largest parish in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos. Its history goes back several centuries, and it is necessary to go back to the 16th century to understand the origin of its name. The locality was named after the nuns of the Convent of Santa.

Bus #81 from Funchal to the Valley of the Nuns was a far better option for me. Most buses stop at Eira do Serrado before continuing to the village of Curral das Freiras. You can check the bus #81 timetable here. The bus sets off from Funchal's cable car station and the journey takes around 45 minutes. In 2023, a return ticket costs €6.70.

The Nuns' Path hike from the Eira do Serrado viewpoint to Curral das Freiras (Valley of the Nuns) is an easy, 1 to 2-hour walk. The narrow path zig-zags down the mountain, giving amazing views. Both the start and end of the hike are on bus routes to and from Funchal.
