The first chapel in Port Douglas was established in 1878 and by November 1881 a church had been erected under the direction of Father Pierre-Marie (Peter) Bucas, a Breton, on land on Port Hill. When Bishop Hutchinson arrived in 1884, an Italian priest, Father Guerrini, had been in Port Douglas for eight months and stayed on until an Augustinian.

An historic church built in the 1880's, the chapel has been fully restored and features a huge glass altar window which offers breathtaking views of the Coral Sea and rainforest clad mountains, stained glass windows, traditional wooden pews and a church bell.

Built in 1880 on the hill in Port Douglas, this historic church was relocated to the current site on November 11, 1988. The Church was fully-restored over a long, difficult twelve months. An official re-opening ceremony was held on November 11, 1989. St Mary's By The Sea is now a non-denominational chapel. Inside, you will find a huge glass.
