Registration is underway for the 17th annual Beef and Eggs 5K, South Dakota's premiere 5K, which will be at 8 a.m. Saturday.. Held annually on Brookings Arts Festival weekend, the race is known to draw some of the area's top college runners as well as moms and grandmas pushing strollers on a generally shady course through Brookings' oldest residential neighborhood.

The Andover, Minn., standout won the Beef and Eggs 5K Saturday with a time of 14:56 (4:48 per mile pace), seventh fastest finish in the 19-year history of the Prairie Striders event. While it was his first Beef and Eggs title, it is the second time for him to run a sub-15 time in the event. In the 2021 race, he finished third with a time of 14:59.

Beef and Eggs 5k also doubles as the USATF Dakota's Association 5k Road Race Championships. If you are a USATF Dakota's member, make sure to register as such to enter yourself into the Dakota's Championship, where you will be eligible for an additional award (top 3 open and top 3 masters men and women).

BROOKINGS - Kyle Burdick, of Sioux Falls, maintained a slim lead over Joshua Yeager, of Brookings, down the stretch and gained a couple steps near the finish line of the 2020 Beef and Eggs 5K on Saturday. Burdick won by 16th annual event by beating Yeager 14:56 to 14:59 (4:48/4:49 pace).

Since 2005, runners fast and slow have been gathering at the Brookings County Courthouse for the Beef and Eggs 5K, which is held on the Saturday of Brookings Arts Festival weekend. While the arts festival is taking a COVID-19 influenced respite, the 3.1-mile race will go on, minus the traditional egg bake breakfast after the Saturday, July 11.
