We had planned on returning via Kalgoorlie, but the road was closed due to massive bushfires, so we decided to take the inland route from Esperance to Wave Rock and York. Wave Rock, in Hyden, is 382 km from Esperance. The route takes you back to Ravensthorpe and then along State Route 40.

Summer, from December through to February, is the best time of year to travel from Perth to Esperance. The weather is hot, but cooler than Perth, with temperatures averaging around 25 degrees celsius. It's a great place to escape the heat further north when summer is in full swing.
